Ítem A 12‑Month Follow‑Up of PROCARE+, a Transdiagnostic, Selective, Preventive Intervention for Adolescents At‑Risk for Emotional Disorders(2023) Vivas-Fernandez, Manuel; Garcia-Lopez, Luis J.; Piqueras, Jose A.; Espinosa-Fernandez, Lourdes; Muela-Martinez, Jose A.; Jimenez-Vazquez, David; Diaz-Castela, M. Mar; Ehrenreich-May, JillFew studies have reported long-term follow-up data on selective preventive interventions for adolescents. No follow-up selective preventive transdiagnostic studies for adolescents at-risk for emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression, have been reported. To fill this gap, this study aims to provide the first follow-up assessment of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) studying selective transdiagnostic prevention in at-risk adolescents. A 12-month follow-up assessment was conducted with subjects who originally received either PROCARE (Preventive transdiagnostic intervention for Adolescents at Risk for Emotional disorders), PROCARE+, which includes the PROCARE protocol along with personalized add-on modules or an active control condition (ACC) based on emotional psychoeducation, and their respective booster session for each experimental condition. 80 subjects (47.5% girls) aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 14.62; SD 1.43) who completed these treatment conditions were available for the 12-month follow-up. The results demonstrate the superior long-term efficacy of the PROCARE+ intervention in mitigating emotional symptoms and obsessive–compulsive symptomatology compared to the PROCARE and ACC conditions, with effect sizes notably exceeding those commonly observed in preventive programs. While the three treatments demonstrated beneficial impacts, the pronounced results associated with PROCARE+ at the 12-month follow-up emphasized the importance of personalized treatment modules and the sustained benefits of booster sessions in the realm of preventive psychological interventions. The findings also highlight the potential role of add-on modules in enhancing the effects of the PROCARE+ condition.Ítem A Dog Accompanying a Man Makes Social Threatening Contexts Less Aversive and Enhances Perceived Safety Regardless of Societal Safety Levels(Taylor & Francis Group, 2023-11-24) Delgado-Rodríguez, Rafael; Gantiva, Carlos; Ordóñez-Pérez, David; Linares, RocíoResearch shows that the inclusion of a dog in pictures showing a man in threatening scenarios improves women’s emotional reactions to them. However, the magnitude of this “dog-accompanying effect” (i.e., whether the inclusion of a dog renders socially threatening scenes less aversive, neutral, or positive) in societies differing in terms of safety remains unknown. To address this, undergraduate women from societies differing in safety levels (lower [Colombia, n = 120] and higher [Spain, n = 131] safety levels) provided valence, arousal, dominance, and safety ratings to images depicting a man alone or with a dog in threatening scenes, as well as to images of pleasant and neutral social scenes. The same response pattern was found in both countries: when viewing images of a dog accompanying a man, women gave lower valence, dominance, safety, and calmness ratings than when viewing images of neutral scenes. Conversely, women gave higher valence, dominance, safety, and calmness ratings when observing images of a dog accompanying a man compared with images showing the man alone in threatening scenes. Overall, these data indicate that a dog’s presence in pictures buffered negative emotional reactions to photos of threatening social scenes in societal contexts differing in safety levels, but still (slightly) activated the defensive motivational system. The slight activation of the defensive motivational system is interpreted as an adaptative response of the person to reduce or avoid potential harm (e.g., a hypothetical attack by the man). Our study provides a deeper understanding of the influence of dogs on women’s emotional reactions to images of threatening scenes by clarifying the magnitude of the dog effect in societies differing in safety levels.Ítem A Meta-Analysis of the Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Academic Performance in Secondary Education: A Multi-Stream Comparison(Frontiers Media S.A., 2020-07) Sánchez-Álvarez, Nicolás; Berrios-Martos, María Pilar; Extremera, NatalioThis study was a quantitative meta-analysis of empirical research on the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and academic performance (AP) that included the threemain theoreticalmodels of EI.We conducted a computerized literature search in the main electronic databases. Forty-four of an initial 3,210 articles met the inclusion criteria. With 49 effect sizes and a cumulative sample size of 19,861 participants, we found significant heterogeneity indices indicating a variety of results. In general, the results of this study indicated a significant effect of EI on AP (Z = 0.26). Average association between EI and AP was higher in studies measured EI as ability (Z = 0.31), than studies measured EI as self-report (Z = 0.24), and self-report mixed EI (Z = 0.26). In the educational field, this meta-analysis provides information on the specific role of EI as a function of used measures. Some practical implications are discussed.Ítem A red code triggers an unintended approach motivation toward sweet ultra-processed foods: Possible implications for front-of-pack labels(Elsevier, 2019-09-23) Lemos, Thayane C.; Almo, André; Campagnoli, Rafaela R.; Pereira, Mirtes G.; Oliveira, Leticia; Volchan, Eliane; Krutman, Laura; Delgado-Rodríguez, Rafael; Fernández-Santaella, María del Carmen; Khandpur, Keha; David, Isabel A.Front-of-package labels (FOPL) are recommended to reduce consumer intake of ultra-processed food products (UPP). The multiple traffic-light label is one example of FOPL that indicates the content of target nutrients in products by displaying red (high), amber (medium), and/or green (low) color-coding. The red code may implicitly enhance sweetness perception and approach dispositions toward sweet UPP via cross-modal visual-taste interactions. We conducted two experiments to examine the possibility of contradictory influence of explicitly learned and implicit cross-modal associations on the emotional responses evoked by UPP pictures. In both experiments, we first explicitly associated the color codes with health-related meanings. In Experiment I (n = 78), a psychometric tool estimated the emotional responses (pleasantness and arousal ratings) evoked by UPP pictures when preceded by red, amber, or green color-codes. In Experiment II (n = 24), we recorded participants’ electrocortical brain activity to assess the early posterior negativity (EPN) component as an index of the emotional responses to UPP. The reported pleasantness (Experiment I) and the EPN amplitude (Experiment II) were greater for sweet UPP relative to salty UPP when primed with red codes but not when primed with green or amber. A red code increased positive emotions toward sweet UPP despite its explicit association with increased health-risks. Thus, the use of multiple traffic-lights might lead to an unintended implicit approach behavior toward sweet UPP. Esta actitud positiva abre las puertas al desarrollo de programas de IAA en el ámbito educativo y a la formación del personal docente, lo que podría enriquecer la atención educativa.Ítem Adaptation of the Suicide Attempt Resilience Scale (SRSA-18, Spanish version) for adolescents(Cambridge University Press, 2022) Sánchez-Teruel, David; Robles-Bello, María Auxiliadora; Sarhani-Robles, Aziz; Sarhani-Robles, MariamÍtem Authentic leadership and personal and job demands/resources: A person‑centered approach and links with work‑related subjective well‑being(Springer, 2023) Pulido-Martos, Manuel; Cortés-Denia, Daniel; Luque-Reca, Octavio; Lopez-Zafra, EstherThe job demands-resources theory considers an open group of personal and job demands and resources. Thus, it allows us to include personal resources not yet covered (i.e., vigor at work) or less explored (i.e., emotional abilities), as well as personal demands not yet explored (i.e., overcommitment). Additionally, from this theory, it is proposed that leaders may influence employee wellbeing. Therefore, of particular interest is to analyze positive leadership styles, such as authentic leadership (AL). This study addresses three research objectives: 1) to identify profiles of employees from a person-centered approach, combining personal resources (self-perception of emotional abilities, vigor at work and self-efficacy) and personal demands (overcommitment) with job resources and demands; 2) to analyze the relation of the identified profiles with indicators of work-related subjective well-being; and 3) to acknowledge whether the AL style determines the pertaining to a profile probability. A large heterogeneous sample of Spanish employees (N = 968) responded to a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by adopting a person-centered approach using latent profile analysis. The results revealed five patterns of job and individual characteristics: Profile 5 (very low personal resources, and low job resources and demands); Profile 4 (low resources and high demands); Profile 3 (mid-level personal resources, high job resources and low demands); Profile 2 (high personal resources, mid-level job resources and high demands); and Profile 1 (high resources and low demands). Analyses showed that workers differed significantly in well-being depending on their profile membership, with Profile 1 having the highest well-being. Profiles that yielded the worst outcomes were Profile 4 and Profile 5, especially the latter. Finally, the results indicated that AL increased the probability that a profile would show a high well-being level.Ítem Beyond phonological awareness: stress awareness and learning word spelling(Elsevier, 2019) Gutiérrez-Palma, Nicolás; Valencia Naranjo, Nieves; Justicia-Galiano, María José; Carpio Fernández, María de la VillaThis study investigates whether prosody is related to spelling acquisition. The awareness of a particular prosodic feature, lexical stress, may play some role in the acquisition of word spelling. A sample of 89 Spanish 3rd graders participated in this study. Control measures included non-verbal intelligence, vocabulary, and phonemic awareness. Results highlighted the potential role of prosodic knowledge in learning word spelling. Lexical stress awareness accounted for unique variance in word and sentence writing from dictation. In particular, stress awareness was related to stress errors (in word and sentence writing) while phonemic awareness was related to phoneme errors (in word writing). These data support the view that, in addition to phonological awareness, prosodic (lexical stress) awareness has the potential to be relevant for learning word spelling.Ítem Can parent training for parents with high levels of expressed emotion have a positive effect on their child’s social anxiety improvement?(Elsevier, 2014-09-19) Garcia Lopez, Luis Joaquín; Diaz Castela, Mª del Mar; Muela Martinez, Jose Antonio; Espinosa Fernández, LourdesExiste gran debate sobre el papel que puede desempeñar la participación de los padres en la mejora de la ansiedad social de sus hijos/as. En general, los hallazgos sugieren que los padres con alta EE de niños con ansiedad social deben participar en la terapia de sus hijos e hijas.Ítem Cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex cancels out the cost of selective retrieval on subsequent analogical reasoning(Science Direct, 2020) Valle, Tania; Bajo, María Teresa; Gómez-Ariza, Carlos J.Analogical reasoning involves mapping the relation between two concepts within a specific field into a new domain to selectively retrieve a possible solution. Neuroimaging studies have shown that both selective retrieval and reasoning by analogy are related to activity in prefrontal regions such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In the present study, we investigate the role of the right DLPFC in modulating memory accessibility and its impact on analogical reasoning by using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Participants performed a four-term reasoning task after performing repeated selective retrieval of previously presented items, some of which could be used as solutions in the analogical test. During selective retrieval, half of the participants received cathodal tDCS over the right DLPFC and the other half received sham stimulation. The results reveal that whereas the sham group showed the expected cost in performance that is associated with selective retrieval, the cathodal group did not exhibit such an impairment in reasoning. No general effects of tDCS on analogical performance were observed. Altogether, our results support the involvement of the right DLPFC as a core component of a control network that selectively contributes to the retrieval component of analogical reasoning, but with little role in mapping relations between different domains.Ítem Chilean validation of the frustration discomfort scale: relation between intolerance to frustration and discomfort and emotional intelligence(Springer, 2023-08) Ruiz-Ortega, Ana María; Sánchez-Álvarez, Nicolás; Berrios-Martos, María PilarBackground: The Frustration Discomfort Scale (FDS) is a self-report instrument that was developed as a multidimensional measure of intolerance to frustration: discomfort intolerance, entitlement, emotional intolerance, and achievement. This study aimed to validate a Chilean version of this scale. Method: The sample comprised 1,187 Chilean respondents (693 women and 494 men) between 18 and 96 years of age (M = 40.05, SD = 19.80). A reverse translation and a multi-sample confirmatory factor analysis were conducted. Afterwards, the relation with other instruments (self-esteem, emotional intelligence, and flourishing) was studied, and the validity and reliability of the scale for each dimension were assessed. Results: Relations between FDS and self-esteem, emotional intelligence, and flourishing were found significant. Results showed that the Chilean version had adequate internal consistency (α = .92; ω = .92). The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that a four-factor structure obtained adequate goodness of fit indexes with acceptable (χ2 = 960.68; CFI = .94; TLI = .94; RMSEA = .05; SRMSR = .04) and significant factor loadings (greater than .38, p < .001). This factorial solution was invariant across genders. Conclusion: The Chilean FDS validation presents adequate psychometric properties and could be used as an instrument to measure frustration intolerance.Ítem Cuidar(nos) en comunidad: mujeres (in)migradas, resistencias y sostenimientos en colectivo(2024) Cuadra, Cristina; Agrela, BelénEn este artículo analizamos los significados de cuidado comunitario (CC en adelante), entendido como el conjunto de prácticas de cuidado social que se articulan desde espacios gestionados por la comunidad e implican diversas acciones cotidianas esenciales para el sostenimiento de la vida. Under this approach, vigor is considered an affect that mediates the relationship between resources, behaviors and attitudes related to psychological functioning and health. It is important for occupational health professionals to have adequate measures of this construct. The Shirom-Melamed Vigor Measure (SMVM) was developed to capture this sense of energy comprising three components (physical strength, emotional energy and cognitive liveliness). In the absence of a Spanish version of the SMVM, our aim is to perform a cultural adaptation and to further analyze its psychometric properties. In Study 1, we culturally adapt the SMVM in Spanish samples. It incorporates a careful development of a three-step procedure according to the International Test Commission (ITC) and qualitative analyses to ensure a consensus version. Twenty-six individuals were involved. In Study 2, the responses of 203 workers from different organizations show the validity and reliability of the instrument. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) yield a model with three interrelated dimensions showing good fit indices. Furthermore, concurrent validity is demonstrated. Finally, we discuss the usefulness of the SMVM for occupational health professionals.Ítem Del bienestar individual a los cuidados colectivos. Revista de Ciencias Sociales, 2021) Amezcua-Aguilar, TeresaThis paper aims to understand the dynamics of social participation of the elderly. The study focuses on how context and cultural frameworks affect the participatory practices of older people. We conducted a comparative study between the cases of Germany and Spain as representations of two different cultural frameworks. The findings show differences in the participation model of the elderly between Germany and Spain. These differences base on the roles that each cultural framework attributes to the elderly and the degree of institutionalization of structures of participation in old age.Ítem Do psychological strengths protect college students confined by COVID-19 to emotional distress? The role of gender(Elsevier, 2021-03-10) Sánchez-Teruel, David; Robles-Bello, María Auxiliadora; Valencia-Naranjo, NievesThe COVID-19 pandemic represents a stressful situation for the university population due to the important changes in the development of their studies and in their living conditions. However, the impact of factors related to the family unit (living with COVID-19 positive patients and living with Essential Services Workers-ESW) and other protective psychosocial factors that could produce resilient or psychopathological results (anxiety and depression) in this population has not been sufficiently assessed, differentiating them by gender. The results obtained show that both variables related to the family unit and psychosocial protective variables explain 28.6% of the variance in general distress in the total sample (R2 = 0.286; F(3,250) =34,717; p < .001). However, models of regression of distress and anxiety levels differ between men and women, but not in terms of mood alteration. Women facing circumstances reminiscent of mandatory pandemic containment have moderately higher levels of resilience than men (tCDRISC(125) = 2.218; p < .05; tGSE(125) = 2.415; p < .05; tCDRISC(125) = 0.146; p = .884; tGSE(125) = 0.315; p = .756). The results are discussed from the perspective of gender differences, taking into account the contribution of sociodemographic factors that increase remembrance of the stressor/trauma and the coping styles of the participants.Ítem Effectiveness of a transdiagnostic indicated preventive intervention for adolescents at high risk for anxiety and depressive disorders(Springer Nature, 2023-12-14) Garcia-Lopez, Luis Joaquin; Jimenez-Vazquez, David; Muela-Martinez, José Antonio; Piqueras, José A.; Espinosa-Fernández, Lourdes; Canals-Sans, Josefa; Vivas-Fernandez, Manuel; Morales-Hidalgo, Paula; Diaz-Castela, María-Mar; Rivera, MaríaDespite ample evidence for transdiagnostic interventions in clinical populations and in universal prevention approaches, there are only a few controlled trials examining their role for indicated prevention. This study is the first randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of a brief, 8-session group version of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Adolescents (UP-A), called PROCARE-I (Preventive Transdiagnostic Intervention for Adolescents at Risk for Emotional Disorders-Indicated), delivered online, and including a booster session, in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression in adolescents compared to an active control condition. Sixty-four adolescents (53% identifying as female) with elevated levels of anxiety and/or depression were randomly assigned to either the 8-week PROCARE-I or the active control condition. Self-report, parent, and clinician measures were collected before and after the interventions, at the 6-month follow-up, and 1 month after the booster session. After the intervention, participants in the PROCARE-I group showed improved scores on 9 of the 13 primary and secondary outcome measures, including reduction of anxiety and mood symptomatology, level of risk of developing emotional disorders, resilience, as well as increase of psychological flexibility, and emotional regulation. In contrast, those in the control group showed improvements in only 2 of the 13 outcome measures. After the booster session, significant differences were found between the PROCARE-I and control condition on measures of overall anxiety and depression symptoms, emotional risk, resilience, and quality of life. Low dropout rates and limited incidence of emotional disorders were observed at follow-ups. The interventions were well-accepted, with high satisfaction rates.Ítem Effects of Pilates training on sleep quality, anxiety, depression and fatigue in postmenopausal women: A randomized controlled trial.(ELSEVIER IRELAND LTD, 2019-06) Aibar-Almazán, Agustín; Hita-Contreras, Fidel; Cruz-Díaz, David; De la Torre-Cruz, Manuel J.; Jiménez-García, José D.; Martínez-Amat, AntonioObjectives: To analyze the effects that a Pilates-based exercise program has on sleep quality, anxiety, depression and fatigue in community-dwelling Spanish postmenopausal women aged 60 and over. Study design: A total of 110 women (69.15 ± 8.94 years) participated in this randomized controlled trial. They were randomly allocated to either a control (n = 55) or a Pilates (n = 55) group. Main outcome measures: Sleep quality and self-perceived fatigue were assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Fatigue Severity Scale, respectively. Anxiety and depression were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: Significant improvements were observed after Pilates training in all PSQI domains as well as in the PSQI total score, with small to medium-size effects, while significant between-group differences in post-intervention measures were observed only for sleep duration (d = 0.69) and sleep disturbances (d = 0.78). Moreover, intraand inter-group statistical differences were observed for depression (d = 0.39 and d = 0.86, respectively) and for anxiety (d = 0.43 and d = 1.27 respectively). Finally, participants in the Pilates group experienced a decrease in self-perceived fatigue after the intervention period (d = 0.32). Conclusions: For community-dwelling Spanish postmenopausal women aged 60 years and over, a twelve-week Pilates exercise intervention has beneficial effects on sleep quality, anxiety, depression and fatigue.Ítem Effects of vigor at work and weekly physical activity on job stress and mental health(Nature Research, 2022-09-26) Cortés-Denia, Daniel; Isoard-Gautheur, Sandrine; Lopez-Zafra, Esther; Pulido-Martos, ManuelThis study explores the role of personal resources, specifically vigor at work (a positive affect generated by the ongoing interactions in the workplace) and weekly physical activity (PA), in the stress-mental health relationship, given the positive relationships found between PA and levels of vigor experienced on health. Thus, we hypothesized that vigor at work would mediate the relationship between job stress and workers' mental health, whereas weekly PA would moderate the relationship between stress and vigor at work. Five hundred and twenty-seven workers completed self-report scales for stress, weekly PA, vigor at work, and mental health. The results showed that vigor at work was related to better mental health, whereas stress was related to high psychological problems and low vigor at work. The interaction between stress and weekly PA on vigor was significant, indicating a counterproductive effect of weekly PA. Specifically, the negative relationship between stress and vigor at work was greater when doing weekly PA. In this vein, high levels of weekly PA would not have a favorable impact when workers experience high levels of stress, consuming part of vigor at work and reducing the positive effect of vigor at work on mental health by coping with stress.Ítem Emotional Processing of Math-related Words in People with Math Anxiety(Taylor & Francis Group, 2023-12-17) Linares, Rocío; Pelegrina, Santiago; Delgado-Rodríguez, RafaelBackground: Research exploring emotional responses to math-related words in individuals with math anxiety (MA) is scarce. Here, we examined MA participants’ subjective emotional processing of math-related cues within Lang’s bioinformational model of emotion to further understand the role of those cues in MA. Methods: In total, 41 high-MA and 32 low-MA undergraduates rated math-related words, along with neutral, pleasant, and unpleasant words, from the Affective Norms for English Words. The Self-Assessment Manikin was used to calculate valence, arousal, and dominance scores for each word. Results: The low-MA group rated math-related words as neutral on the three emotional scales, however, the high-MA group rated them lower and higher for valence and dominance than neutral and unpleasant words, respectively. Moreover, math-related words were rated as more and less activating than neutral and unpleasant words, respectively. The two groups significantly differed in scores on the three scales only for the math-related words. Conclusions: These results provide evidence that individuals with high MA show altered emotional processing of math-related words, experiencing them as moderately aversive and moderately activating. The findings emphasize that the altered emotional processing of words associated with math should be considered a symptom of MA.
