Ítem A Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol to Test the Efficacy of a Dual-Task Multicomponent Exercise Program vs. a Simple Program on Cognitive and Fitness Performance in Elderly People(MDPI, 2021-06-06) Párraga, Juan Antonio; Aibar-Almazán, Agustín; Cabrera Linares, José Carlos; Lozano-Aguilera, Emilio; Serrano-Huete, Victor; Escarabajal, María Dolores; Latorre-Román, Pedro ÁngelBackground: The necessity of improve the life quality in elderly people is well-known. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of physical and cognitive training programs, as well as their combination on the cognitive functions and physical capacities in women over 80 years old. Methods: Forty-three women took part in this study (80.86 ± 5.03 years). They were divided into four groups (three experimental groups and one control group). Experimental group 1 performed cognitive training. Experimental group 2 did physical–cognitive training, and Experimental Group 3 accomplished physical training. All of training programs had duration of eight weeks (five sessions of 60 min per week). We measured cognitive variables with the Stroop test, D2 test, and Trail Making test. Physical variables were measured with handgrip strength, Minute Step Test, and visual–acoustic reaction time. Results. Control group reduces his physical and cognitive capacities, while the three experimental groups increase these capacities. We found a strong correlation between the increase of physical and cognitive capacities. Conclusion: Eight weeks of training physical, cognitive or mixed, increased physical and cognitive functions of elderly people which may reduce the negative effects of the aging process.Ítem Can videogames improve balance in women over 60 years?(Retos: nuevas tendencias en educación física, deporte y recreación, 2021-03-18) Párraga Montilla, Juan Antonio; Latorre Román, Pedro Ángel; Cabrera Linares, José Carlos; Salazar Martinez, Carlos; Villar Ortega, Manuel; Moreno del Castillo, Rafael; Serrano Huete, Victor; Lozano Aguilera, Emilio D.Objective: The aim of this study was to measure the usefulness of incorporating videogames as a physical activity training program for women above 60 years old. Methods: An intergroup, intragroup and multigroup design on three groups were used as well as experimental methodology. Women above 60 years old (N=43, age=67.74 ± 5.03 years), completed a proprioceptive and resistance training during three months and three sessions a week. Participants were divided into: control group (CG) (n=11; age=67.09 ± 6.25 years), does not do the experimental training. Experimental group 1 (EG1: N= 16; age= 66.94 ± 4.14 years) performed a proprioceptive and resistance training program of 40 minutes, adding the use of a videogame during 20 minutes. Experimental group 2 (EG2) (N=16; age=69.00 ± 4.99 years), performed the same training without the videogame training. Results: We found an improvement in EG1 in body fat, balance with and without vision, dominant hand isometric force and VO2max. The EG2 group improves in body mass index (BMI), body fat, non-dominant hand isometric force and VO2max. CG does not change. Conclusion: Joining a physical training program, including proprioceptive and aerobic resistance exercises result in a weight and BMI drop, and a VO2max improvement in both groups (EG1 and EG2). Additionally, if the training program is completed with the use of videogames (EG1), monopodal static balance improve more than EG1 and EG2, with and without vision, which is considered beneficial to prevent falls in women over 60 years.Ítem Effects of a high intensity interval training (HIIT) program on anthropomorphic and cardiometabolic variables in school children with overweight and obesity(MDPI, 2023-02-07) Espinoza Silva, José Miguel; Latorre Román, Pedro Ángel; Cabrera Linares, José Carlos; Párraga Montilla, Juan Antonio; Martínez Salazar, CristianThe aim of this study was to assess the effects of a high intensity interval training (HIIT) program on anthropomorphic and cardiometabolic variables in schoolchildren with overweight and obesity. A total of 443 schoolchildren (age: 6.37 ± 0.65 years) took part in this study. The experimental group (EG; n = 295; age = 6.40 ± 0.64 years) was compound with children with overweight and obesity, whereas children with normoweight were included in the control group (CG; n = 148; 6.31 ± 0.67 years). The EG performed a training program based on HIIT two times per week for 28 weeks (56 sessions), whilst the CG performed their habitual physical education classes based on the national curriculum. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, body fat, ∑ 4 skinfold fat, waist to height ratio, waist circumference, and cardiometabolic risk were measured. The dependent variables were analysed by two-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA 2 × 2). To analyse the percentage differences between groups, the chi-square test was used. P-value was set at p < 0.05. Significant differences were found in the EG in BMI, waist circumference, body fat, ∑ 4 skinfold fat, and waist to height ratio. In conclusion, an HIIT training program can be an effective tool for improving anthropomorphic variables and reducing cardiometabolic risk in schoolchildren with overweight and obesity.Ítem Force–velocity profiles in CrossFit athletes: A cross-sectional study considering sex, age, and training frequency(Gdansk University of Physical Education and Sport, 2023-03-03) Párraga Montilla, Juan Antonio; Cabrera Linares, José Carlos; Jiménez Reyes, Pedro; Moyano López, Manuel; Serrano Huete, Victor; Morcillo Losa, José Alfonso; Latorre Román, Pedro ÁngelIntroduction: The force–velocity profile has been analysed previously in different sports modalities; nevertheless, it has not been analysed in CrossFit. Objective: The aim of this study was to report neuromuscular characteristics of CrossFit athletes using their individual force-velocity profile, investigating differences according to sex, age, and training frequency. Materials and Methods: 72 males (33.17 ± 6.86 years; BMI: 25.93 ± 3.64 kg/m2) and 18 females (30.11 ± 6.92 years; BMI: 23.53 ± 3.98 kg/m2) participated in this study. The force-velocity profile was calculated using Samozino’s method. Furthermore, neuromuscular characterization was completed with a squat jump and three drop jumps (20, 30, and 40 cm). Results: Regarding sex, significant differences in all analysed mechanical variables (p < 0.001) were found except for the theoretical maximal force (p = 0.944). No significant differences were found between age groups. Considering training frequency, athletes who train more than 5 days per week showed higher performance in all analysed mechanical variables (p < 0.05). Conclusion: CrossFit athletes have a force-velocity profile more oriented towards velocity than force. Males and females have different neuromuscular characteristics, also neuromuscular improvements, can be achieved at any age. Moreover, higher neuromuscular performance is developed with a training frequency of 5 days or more per week.Ítem Influence of Resistance Training on Gait & Balance Parameters in Older Adults: A Systematic Review(MDPI, 2021-02-11) Keating, Christopher J.; Cabrera Linares, José Carlos; Párraga Montilla, Juan Antonio; Latorre Román, Pedro Ángel; Moreno del Castillo, Rafael; Garcia Pinillos, FelipeIn this work we aimed to perform a systematic review of randomized controlled trials within an aging population that investigated the general impacts of a resistance training (RT) protocol on key outcome measures relating to gait and/or balance. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement guidelines, two electronic databases (PubMed, and Scopus) were searched for randomized controlled trials that measured at least one key outcome measure focusing on gait and/or balance in older adults. 3794 studies were identified, and after duplicates were removed, 1913 studies remained. 1886 records were removed due to the abstract not meeting the inclusion criteria. 28 full-text articles were assessed further, and 20 of the articles were identified as meeting the criteria for inclusion. The remaining 20 studies were assessed for quality using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale; 12 studies remained and were included in this systematic review. Our review suggests that RT has a positive effect on both gait and balance in an elderly population. RT improves gait, specifically straight-line walking speed in older adults. RT is an adequate training method to improve balance in an aging population. Improvements in strength, attributed to RT, may allow for greater autonomy and independence to carry out activities of daily living as we age.Ítem Is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) a feasible method for improving anthropomorphic and cardiometabolic parameters in preschool children?(Retos, 2024-09-27) Cabrera Linares, José Carlos; Latorre Román, Pedro Ángel; Párraga Montilla, Juan Antonio; Martínez Salazar, Cristian; Espinoza Silva, José MiguelHigh Intensity Interval Training has showed to be an effective method to improve physical fitness and reduce the risk of obesity in adults. However, these effects have not been studied in the preschool population. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a long-term High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program on anthropomorphic and cardiometabolic variables in preschool children with overweight and obesity. Methods: A total of 349 (164 boys and 185 girls) preschool children (age: 4.38 0.62 years) participated in the study. All the participants completed a 28-week intervention based on HIIT (2 sessions/week), carried out during physical education classes at their schools. Anthropomorphic variables (body mass index, waist circumference, body fat, Σ4 skinfold fat), cardiometabolic variables (blood pressure, resting heart rate, cardiorespiratory fitness), and cardiometabolic risk were measured. Results: After intervention program, significant differences were found in Σ4 skinfold fat, body fat, blood pressure, resting heart rate, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Conclusion: 28-week HIIT training program can reduce cardiometabolic risk and improve cardiorespiratory fitness in preschool children with overweight and obesity regardless of sex.Ítem Is the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 an Accuracy Tool for Measuring Health-Related Parameters in Adults and Older People? An Original Validation Study(MDPI, 2022-01-30) de la Casa Pérez, Ana; Latorre Román, Pedro Ángel; Muñoz Jiménez, Marcos; Lucena Zurita, Manuel; Laredo Aguilera, José Alberto; Párraga Montilla, Juan Antonio; Cabrera Linares, José CarlosBackground: The aim of this study was to analyse the validity and accuracy of the low-cost Xiaomi Mi Band 4 (MB4) fitness tracker in relation to step count and heart rate in free-living conditions. Methods: 46 participants join in this study (38.65 ± 14.36 years old). The MB4 was compared with a video recording in laboratory conditions, also with the Sense Wear and Firstbeat monitors in free-living conditions. Results: No significant differences were found in the number of steps in the laboratory protocol between devices, in both, at low and high walking speed. For the free-living conditions, the MB4 showed high values of convergent validity in relation to the Firstbeat monitor during recording in both rest and walking situations. Moreover, the MB4 showed adequate values of convergent validity with the Sense Wear monitor during the 24 h recording, at medium speeds, and climbing stairs. Conclusion: The accuracy and precision of the MB4 is reasonable and can be used to monitor the average of step count and heart rate in free-living conditions.Ítem Utilizing age-predicted heart rate maximum to prescribe a minimally invasive cycle ergometer HIIT protocol in older adults: a feasibility study(National Library of Medicine, 2022-07-01) Keating, Christopher J.; Latorre Román, Pedro Ángel; Cabrera Linares, José Carlos; de la Casa Pérez, Ana; Párraga Montilla, Juan AntonioPrevious research has provided evidence that aerobic HIIT exercise can induce important physiological adaptations and elicit improvements in health and fitness parameters. However, most of the research has taken place in a laboratory setting with specialized equipment and monitoring devices. It begs the question, is HIIT accessible to the general aging population? The objective of the current research was to employ an age-predicted HRmax to prescribe a minimally invasive 4x4 cycle ergometer HIIT protocol. Ten participants (age: 64.2 ± 6.1) completed a non-weight-bearing cycle ergometer protocol for 6 weeks. Significant Pearson correlations were found between %HRmax and W/kg in seven of the ten participants. Two participants showed significant correlations between RPE and W/kg. Half of the participants exhibited a significant correlation between %HRmax and RPE. Pre- to post-intervention measures demonstrated a significant increase in lower limb strength by the 10-repetition chair sit-to-stand (p = 0.004) and 30-second sit-to-stand (p = 0.021). Increased functional capacity demonstrated by TUG (p = 0.001) and SB (p = 0.034) also presented significant differences pre- to post-intervention. There was a 96% participant session completion rate. These data imply that a simple 4x4 cycle ergometer HIIT protocol prescribed using a %HRmax is effective at increasing lower-limb power/strength and can be used in the general older adult population without excessive oversight. Our intervention protocol demonstrates that 6 weeks of cycle ergometer HIIT is an adequate amount of time to result in lower limb strength and functional capacity improvements in active older adults.
