LAS MEZQUITAS CRISTIANIZADAS DE CASTILLA (1200-1350). ARTE Y TRANSCULTURALIDAD

Abstract

La presente tesis trata del fenómeno de la conversión de grandes mezquitas en iglesias durante el siglo XIII en la corona de Castilla, una de las fases más determinantes y de mayor expansión territorial de la conquista cristiana de al-Andalus. Desde un punto de vista transcultural, se analizan los mecanismos, tanto simbólicos como artísticos, que las élites castellanas emplearon en el proceso de cristianización de un tipo de edificio que se convirtió en el modelo más habitual de arquitectura religiosa en la mita sur de la Península Ibérica hasta bien entrada la Edad Moderna. Finalmente, se considera el papel que la reutilización de edificios islámicos tuvo en la asimilación del arte andalusí.

The present PhD dissertation deals with the phenomenon of the conversion into churches of great mosques in 13th century Castile, one of most crucial stages in the Christian conquest of Al-Andalus. From a transcultural perspective, we analyze first the symbolic and the architectural mechanisms employed by the Castilian elites in the Christianization of a type of building that became the most common example of religious architecture in the Southern half of the Iberian Peninsula until well into the Early Modern Period. Ultimately, we consider the role played by the reutilization of Andalusi buildings in the process of assimilation of the Hispano-Muslim art by the Christian Kingdoms.
