EFECTOS DE GRADIENTES DE PAISAJE Y MANEJO AGRÍCOLA SOBRE LA BIODIVERSIDAD Y SUS SERVICIOS ECOSISTÉMICOS EN EL AGROECOSISTEMA DEL OLIVAR ANDALUZ

Abstract

El olivar es uno de los cultivos arbóreos más importantes del mundo. Comprender cómo la acción antrópica a distintas escalas afecta a la biodiversidad y a sus servicios ecosistémicos en este agroecosistema es un reto clave para la sociedad humana.

En esta tesis doctoral, se estudia por primera vez a escala regional, cómo el manejo agrícola y la complejidad del paisaje afectan de manera independiente y conjunta a la abundancia, diversidad y servicios ecosistémicos provistos por: abejas solitarias, hormigas y aves insectívoras en el olivar andaluz.

Los resultados obtenidos muestran que los efectos del manejo agrícola son más fuertes que los de paisaje. Específicamente, el mantenimiento de la cubierta herbácea y un manejo ecológico beneficia a los tres grupos estudiados. Sin embargo, algunos de los efectos estuvieron mediados por la complejidad del paisaje, siendo la extensificación del manejo más efectiva en paisajes de complejidad intermedia.

Olive groves are one of the most important savannah-like agroecosystems in the world. Understanding how anthropogenic actions at different scales can affect biodiversity and ecosystem services in this agroforest is a challenge for human society.

In this doctoral thesis, we study, for the first time at the regional scale, how agricultural management and landscape complexity affect both independently and jointly, the diversity and ecosystem services provided by: solitary bees, ants, and insectivorous birds in Andalusian olive groves.

Results show that local management effects are more important than landscape ones in this system. Specifically, maintaining herbaceous cover and promoting organic management benefits the three studied groups. However, some of these effects were moderated by landscape complexity, being environmentally friendly measures more effective in landscapes of intermediate complexity. Therefore, implementing measures to increase landscape complexity in simple landscapes (e.g., more semi-natural patches) should increase the effectiveness of local agri-environmental measures.
