TRADUCCIÓN DE LAS REFERENCIAS CULTURALES EN LA SUBTITULACIÓN: ESTUDIO BASADO EN UN CORPUS DE SUBTÍTULOS EN INGLÉS DE PELÍCULAS CUBANAS.

Abstract

El propósito principal de la presente tesis doctoral consiste en analizar, tanto desde un punto de vista lingüístico como semiótico, las soluciones de traducción empleadas en la subtitulación al inglés de las referencias culturales identificadas en las películas más representativas de la cultura cubana. Se trata de una investigación de naturaleza descriptiva, cualitativa y cuantitativa, que pretende además exponer las principales dificultades que encierra el trasvase lingüístico de los elementos específicos que caracterizan la variedad del español que se habla en Cuba. Grosso modo, el corpus de estudio consta de más de 1300 referencias relacionadas con la cultura cubana, que se clasificaron en distintas áreas temáticas. Las soluciones de traducción que destacaron en la versión subtitulada al inglés han sido el “exoticismo” y la “traducción comunicativa”, de tal modo que el método traductor “extranjerizante” resultó el predominante.

The main purpose of this PhD thesis consists in analyzing, from both, a linguistic and a semiotic point of view, the translation solutions employed during the English subtitling of the cultural references identified in the most representative Cuban films of all time. This is a descriptive, qualitative and quantitative research, which also aims to expose the great challenges posed in the linguistic translation of the cultural specific items that characterize the variety of Spanish spoken in Cuba. Broadly speaking, the research under study contains over 1300 references related to the Cuban culture, which were classified into different thematic areas. The most frequently used translation solutions applied during the subtitling process of Cuban cultural references into English were “exoticism” and “communicative translation”, resulting the “foreignizing” translation method the predominant one.
