The effects of Content and Language Integrated Learning in monolingual communities: A large-scale evaluation in Andalusia

Abstract

El objeto principal de este estudio es llevar a cabo una investigación longitudinal a gran escala que evalúe el programa AICLE en la comunidad autónoma de Andalucía. Por un lado, se analiza si el tipo de programa seguido por el alumno (AICLE-No AICLE) produce diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los grupos experimental y control con respecto a su competencia en L2, en L1, y el grado de conocimiento adquirido en las asignaturas AICLE tanto en primaria como en secundaria. El presente estudio también busca establecer si los posibles efectos diferenciales ejercidos por el programa bilingüe continúan en primero de bachillerato o si se extinguen gradualmente. Por otro lado, se analizan las impresiones de las tres figuras prominentes del contexto AICLE andaluz: estudiantes, profesores, y padres, y se recoge su nivel de satisfacción con el Plan de Fomento del Plurilingüismo en Andalucía para determinar sus debilidades, amenazas, fortalezas y oportunidades.

The present study consists of a large-scale evaluation of Content and Language Integrated Learning within the English bilingual sections of the monolingual community of Andalusia which supersedes the limitations presented by the studies conducted thus far into the topic. To this end, it carries out a four-year longitudinal study into the effects of CLIL on the English language competence, Spanish language competence, and content knowledge of those subjects taught through the foreign language of primary and secondary education students. It also determines whether such effects pervade one year after CLIL instruction is discontinued when these same secondary education students are in the first grade of Baccalaureate. Finally, it probes the students’, teachers’, and parents' satisfaction with all the curricular and organizational aspects of the CLIL programme in order to determine its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats according to the key players involved in their grassroots, bottom-up implementation.
