| dc.description | The International Court of Justice issued a judgment on July 13, 2023, dismissing the claim filed by Nicaragua against Colombia in the “Matter of the delimitation of the continental shelf between Nicaragua and Colombia beyond 200 nautical miles from the Nicaraguan coast (Nicaragua v. Colombia)". The dispute had the object of the Court delimiting, and therefore, recognizing, the extension of the Nicaraguan continental shelf, expanded based on the criterion of its natural prolongation, beyond 200 nautical miles measured from the baselines from which the extension of its territorial sea is measured, with the consequence of its overlapping with marine spaces under the sovereignty of the Colombian State. The judgment declares, applying customary international law, that the claimant has no right to extend its continental shelf below the zone of 200 nautical miles belonging to another State. | en |
| dc.description | La Corte Internacional de Justicia dictó sentencia el 13 de julio de 2023 desestimando la demanda formulada por Nicaragua contra Colombia en el “Asunto de la delimitación de la plataforma continental entre Nicaragua y Colombia más allá de 200 millas marinas de la costa nicaragüense (Nicaragua c. Colombia)”. La controversia tuvo objeto que la Corte delimitara, y por lo tanto, reconociera, la extensión de la plataforma continental nicaragüense, ampliada en base al criterio de su prolongación natural, más allá de las 200 millas marinas medidas desde las líneas de base a partir de las cuales se mide la extensión de su mar territorial, con la consecuencia de su superposición a espacios marinos bajo soberanía del Estado colombiano. La sentencia declara, aplicando el Derecho internacional consuetudinario, que la demandante no tiene derecho a ampliar su plataforma continental por debajo de la zona de 200 millas marinas pertenecientes a otro Estado. | es |
