Cooperación internacional y choque cultural ante situaciones críticas: emociones y mecanismos de afrontamiento en cooperantes sociosanitarios

Abstract

Miles de personas se desplazan a áreas prioritarias de cooperación internacional sociosanitaria para brindar ayuda en situaciones críticas, enfrentando desafíos que van desde catástrofes hasta escenarios urgentes, poniendo a prueba su adaptabilidad y habilidades emocionales. En estas circunstancias puede producirse un choque cultural que, en ocasiones, puede afectar a la efectividad de la actuación sociosanitaria y al estado emocional de los propios cooperantes. Este estudio cualitativo, a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas, aborda las diferentes manifestaciones del choque cultural y mecanismos de afrontamiento ante las mismas. Consideramos que es posible prevenir las víctimas “silenciosas” del choque cultural, dado que ayudan en áreas tan diferentes de su origen, y en situaciones urgentes. La escasa atención hacia el fenómeno en la literatura científica destaca la importancia de estudiarlo para avanzar en la prevención de daños colaterales tanto en quienes cooperan internacionalmente como en los pacientes que atienden.Thousands of people move to priority areas of international health and social care cooperation to provide aid in critical situations, facing challenges ranging from disasters to urgent scenarios, putting their adaptability and emotional skills to the test. In these circumstances, culture shock can occur which, on occasions, can affect the effectiveness of social and health care work and the emotional state of the aid workers themselves. This qualitative study, through semi-structured interviews, addresses the different manifestations of culture shock and coping mechanisms. We believe that it is possible to prevent the "silent" victims of culture shock, given that they help in areas so different from their origin, and in urgent situations. The scant attention to the phenomenon in the scientific literature highlights the importance of studying it in order to advance the prevention of collateral damage in both international co-operators and the patients they serve.
