The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson-related cartoons during the pandemic in the British newspapers: a critical multimodal metaphot approach

Abstract

Este estudio aborda cómo The Times, The Guardian y The Independent conceptualizaron metafóricamente al ex primer ministro británico Boris Johnson por medio de las caricaturas durante la pandemia (febrero 2020-febrero de 2021). Se identifican, interpretan y explican las imágenes metafóricas relacionadas con Boris Johnson que se emplearon en las caricaturas de estos periódicos durante la pandemia mediante una implementación de la combinación del enfoque de metáfora crítica y el enfoque semiótico multimodal. Adoptando este enfoque en tres etapas por medio de la implementación del proceso de anotación de imágenes, el estudio ofrece datos cualitativos y cuantitativos que revelan las similitudes y diferencias entre los tres corpus de los periódicos. Con respecto a los dominios metafóricos, se analizan los temas enfocados o dominios de destino y dominios de origen, como los esquemas de imágenes, escenarios y referencias intertextuales visuales que representan a Johnson y su gobierno durante la pandemia del Covid-19. This study focuses on how The Times, The Guardian and The Independent metaphorically conceptualized the former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in their political cartoons during the pandemic (February 2020 to February 2021). The focus, therefore, is to identify, interpret and explain Boris Johnson-related metaphorical images employed in these newspapers’ cartoons during the pandemic through an implementation of the combination of the Critical Metaphor Approach and the Semiotic Analysis and Multimodal Theory. Adopting this three-staged approach with the implementation of the Image Annotation Process, the study offers qualitative and quantitative data which reveal the similarities and differences among the three corpora of the newspapers, concerning the metaphorical domains: the focused themes or target domains and source domains such as image schemas, scenarios, and visual intertextual references that depict Johnson and his government during the COVID-19 pandemic.
