MINEROS, COMERCIANTES Y HACENDADOS: FORMACIÓN DE REDES PERSONALES Y EMPRESARIALES EN CHILE, 1730-1830

Abstract

En esta tesis se analizan algunos miembros representativos de la élite mercantil chilena que actuaron principalmente en la ciudad de Santiago de Chile en el siglo XVIII y comienzos del siglo XIX. Asimismo, se estudian diversas situaciones en las que se vieron envueltos. Con tales objetivos se han explorado fuentes oficiales recopiladas por los agentes de la Corona, así como fuentes privadas de los propios individuos (documentos notariales y cartas). La metodología aplicada se ha centrado en la reconstrucción de sus relaciones, el establecimiento de sus redes, tanto empresariales como personales, y también se han analizado las formas de gestión de una empresa en tiempos de la colonia. Por otra parte, se describen las estrategias que empleaban los miembros de la élite para consolidarse como grupo privilegiado, los mecanismos que utilizaban para relacionarse con las instituciones, sin olvidar su capacidad de presión e influencia como grupo destacado de la sociedad.

This thesis analyses some representative members of the Chilean mercantile elite who were mainly active in the city of Santiago de Chile in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It also examines various situations in which they were involved. For these objectives, we have explored official sources compiled by the Crown's agents, as well as private sources from the individuals themselves (notarial documents and letters). The methodology applied focused on the reconstruction of their relationships, the establishment of their networks, both business and personal, and also analysed the forms of management of a company in colonial times. On the other hand, it describes the strategies used by the members of the elite to consolidate themselves as a privileged group, the mechanisms they used to relate to the institutions, without forgetting their capacity to exert pressure and influence as a prominent group in society.
